I recently took a family trip to Jamaica for vacation. There were many interesting things I learned about the island while I was there. On the plane I saw how mountainous the island really was. I also saw that there were many fires and later learned that Jamaica had the most fires per square mile. There are also more churches per square mile than any other country. One thing I noticed while in Jamaica was that the crescent moon seemed to be upside down at night. This is because of the location. Also, Jamaica does run on Eastern Standard Time but they do not celebrate Daylight Saving Time. People in Jamaica drive on the left side of the road because it used to be a British country. The current Miss Jamaica is 21 year old Ashlie Barrett White. Although the official language of Jamaica is English, many people there also speak Patois, sometimes called Creole, an English-based creole language. Jerk is a very popular spice, used on a variety of meat- there’s apparently a jerk stand in every town. Reggae is of the most popular music genres in Jamaica and Bob Marley (2/6/1945-5/11/1981) is especially celebrated for his reggae music. February is actually reggae month. Bob Marley practiced Rastafarianism, a religion which is typically represented by dreadlocks and only practiced by about 30,000 people, a small percent of the population. I learned a lot of interesting things while in Jamaica!
